Teens and people in their early 20’s are three times more likely to get into an accident than any other age group. They’re risk-takers, indulge in speeding, or forget about necessary precautions. At Nelson’s Services, Inc., we believe all new drivers must be cautious, especially while driving over long distances.

Safety Tips for New Drivers

Most accidents happen because a driver is distracted by something. Even the slightest shift in attention can have disastrous consequences. That’s why drivers need to maintain focus on the road at all times. Always scan the road ahead, check the mirrors regularly, and keep all background noise like music low. If you’re vigilant, you can avoid dangerous situations.

Don’t Use Your Cell Phone

Texting while driving can increase the chances of an accident by 23 times, which means it is hazardous. Even speaking on a phone while it is connected to your car’s system is risky. If you have to take a call, move off the road, find a spot to park and take the call.

Don’t Eat While Driving

Eating is just as risky as using a mobile. Spilling something might startle and distract you from the road. While drive-thru’s are tempting, they aren’t safe. Park your car before digging into your snack. Food is much more enjoyable this way as there’s no need for juggling different items while keeping a hand on the wheel.

Distractions can be life-threatening, especially for new drivers. Avoid them as much as possible while driving. You can always park your car and handle these distractions safely instead of placing lives at risk by being on the road.
